Big Picture: Responding to the Challenge of Growth

Brookhaven is forecast to grow by nearly 90,000 persons by 2030, yet the household size is reducing significantly. This means that the Town of Brookhaven will need to provide a higher proportion of dwelling units to population then in the past. This growth will require nearly 60,000 new units of housing by 2030, so from a land use perspective, the major issue facing Brookhaven is how to address growth and change so that:

Needs of the community and its residents, both present and future, are
met in the most efficient and cost-effective manner;
Positive elements of the Town’s character is maintained, and;
Quality of life is enhanced
