Black History Commission

In 1991, the Black History Month Committee was formed in observance of Black History Month. Two years later in 1993, the Town Board proclaimed the Black History Commission and February as “Black History Month. The original members are as follows; Elsie Owens, Roberta A. Owens, Wayne Hart, Willie B, Gaskins Madeline Burwell and Rev. William Smith. Collectively the six-member commission creatively collaborated to fulfill it original mission. They will be forever known as trailblazers.

Mission Statement:

To uphold the integrity, accomplishments and contributions made by African Americans living within the Town of Brookhaven during the month of February; to promote awareness, knowledge and information regarding the cultural heritage of African Americans; not excluding the world; Further, the commissions resources are for anyone seeking a greater understanding of the cultural background of African Americans.
