Division of Streetlighting

The entire Town of Brookhaven (exclusive of Fire Island) is included in the Town-wide Streetlighting District.  All properties within this district are assessed an annual fee to pay for the installation, maintenance and operation of streetlights throughout the Town (regardless of whether or not there are streetlights on a particular street).

The Division of Streetlighting maintains the streetlights on all Town roadways, as well as all County and State Highways (except Sunrise Highway and the Long Island Expressway).  At the present time, there are approximately 44,000 streetlights in the Town of Brookhaven.  Each of these lights have been mapped by the Global Positioning System (GPS) and entered into our priority Streetlighting Inventory and Maintenance System (SIMS).  SIMS is used to track the status of each light, its maintenance history, wattage, etc., as well as tracking warehouse inventory.  Each year, the Division repairs more than 8,000 streetlights.

The Division’s inspectors review and inspect the streetlight installations in new developments prior to acceptance into the Town’s streetlighting system.  Approximately 1,000 streetlights per year are added in this fashion.

In those older areas of the Town that were built up prior to the implementation of modern subdivision regulations, some roadways do not have streetlights.  In those areas, the Town has developed a petition process wherein if a majority of the residents on a particular street request streetlights, they will be installed by the Town at no additional charge to the residents.

The Division of Streetlighting has recently completed a capital project on William Floyd Parkway (County Road 46) in Shirley.  The Town installed 26 new streetlights at the intersections of Whiskey Road and Longwood Road.  It is hoped that these improvements will enhance public safety at these busy intersections of William Floyd Parkway.

The Division is also in the first phase of a 3-year, one million dollar project to upgrade 5,994 lights in the Town to more energy efficient lighting. The end result of this project will be an electric savings of $473,000 a year.
