Brookhaven Elected Officials

Brookhaven Town has 10 elected officials including the Supervisor, six Town Council members, a Town Clerk, Superintendent of Highways, and Receiver of Taxes.

The Town Board Members are voted in by a council district system. The Supervisor and Town Council are elected to two-year terms. The Town Clerk is elected for a four-year term, the Superintendent of Highways is elected for a 2-year term, and the Receiver of Taxes is elected for a four-year term.

Supervisor
The Supervisor is the chief administrator of the Town government, the supervisor is responsible for overseeing legislation and preparing the annual Town budget. Town Clerk
The Town Clerk is responsible for keeping records of the Town Board meetings and of contracts and agreements the Town makes. The Clerk also processes licenses, permits and certificates of birth, marriage and death. The Town Clerk is elected to a four-year term. Click here to view Town Clerk's web page.

Highway Superintendent
The Superintendent of Highways is elected to a 2-year term. The Highway Department is charged with taking care of all the Town roads in Brookhaven, and managing road repairs and snow removal. The Highway Department also maintains an ecology education center and animal preserve, which explores ways to reclaim the old landfill site as a park. The site is also home to the Town's greenhouses. Tax Receiver
The Tax Receiver is elected to a four-year term. He is responsible for collecting the County, Town, School and Special District taxes from Town residents and businesses, and distributes them properly.

Town Council
Each council member has one vote on the Town board. Council members introduce and vote on legislation, address residents' needs, and serve as liasions to various Town departments and committees. Council members serve two-year terms.
