Division of Fire Prevention
The Division of Fire Prevention is charged with the following general duties and responsibilities:

The inspection of all buildings and premises except single-family dwellings.

The review of plans, issuance of permits and subsequent inspections for new construction and alterations of all buildings except single-family dwellings, as well as for fire alarm systems, fire sprinkler systems, extinguishing systems etc.

Inspection, annually, of 24 categories of commercial establishments for operating permits.

Investigation of fires and related incidents occurring in buildings, vehicles and vessels.

Investigation of complaints alleging violations of Town Local Law.

Mitigating, investigating and coordinating other agencies (Fire Department, Police Department, NYS DEC, SC Health, etc.) in hazardous materials incidents.

Examination of abandoned tanks, drums, etc. found along roadways and public property prior to removal by Waste Management or NYS DEC.

Installation of tanks for LP Gas, combustible and flammable liquids at most premises.

Testing for suitability of LP Gas workers.
-
Public Education on fire safety, fire extinguisher use and similar subjects for various groups, service organizations, businesses, Town employees, Senior Citizens Clubs, schools, etc.

A Juvenile Fire Setter Intervention Program to detect, evaluate and correct or refer to others, juveniles involved in starting fires.

Operation of four heavy duty vehicles and their special equipment used for Haz Mat Incidents, emergency management, fire investigation, evacuations etc.

Inspections of Carnivals and similar activities.
