With a fleet of more than 40 vehicles, the Jitney Transportation Program is a shared ride, curb to curb service provided within the Town of Brookhaven to our Senior Citizen and Disabled residents who have no other means of transportation. Transportation is provided to doctors, shopping and various other locations. Note: If you reside in a complex that offers bus service of any kind, you will only be eligible for the medical transportation portion of our Jitney Program.

Fares:
The fare is $3.00 round trip. The exact fare is required—drivers do not carry change.
Grocery Shopping:
This service is provided on a weekly basis to our residents who have no other means of doing grocery shopping.
Subscription Service: Example- Dialysis, Radiation, etc.
This is offered to clients who travel to the same destination at the same time at least 2 days per week. If you require this type of service, notify the office staff when making these appointments. If you must cancel or put your subscription service on hold due to illness, hospitalization, etc., the Jitney Program will keep your reservation on hold for no longer than 30 days. After 30 days you must call for availability.
Driver’s Assistance:
We are not a “Hands On” service. Drivers are not permitted to render assistance to and from your residence to the vehicle or to and from your destination. Drivers are only authorized to assist you on and off the vehicle. If you need further assistance, a Personal Care Assistant is required.
Personal Care Assistant:
There is no charge for a Personal Care Assistant. If you require a Personal Care Assistant, you must notify us in advance. If you do not notify us and there is no room on the vehicle, you may be denied service.
Service Animals:
Service animals are permitted.
Wheelchair:
If you require a wheelchair to board our vehicle, the Jitney program will supply a wheelchair, based on availability.
Mobility Aids:
All mobility aids must be in good working order with no defects. The driver has the right to refuse transportation to any passenger who wants to board the vehicle with defective or inadequate equipment.
Seatbelts:
Seatbelts are required at all times while the vehicle is in motion. Any client who refuses to wear a seatbelt will be refused transportation.
Cancellations:
Cancellations can be made until the day before the scheduled appointment. Any appointment cancelled on the same day will be subject to the $3.00 fee.
Inclement Weather:
While the Jitney operates during inclement weather, there may be instances that we cannot accommodate you. (Example: road conditions, snow accumulation, etc.)
Holiday Closings:
The Jitney Transportation Program closes for all holidays observed by the Town.
Tipping:
Under no circumstances are the drivers allowed to accept tips, so please do not offer them.
The Town of Brookhaven Jitney Transportation Program is in full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
