Get Involved—Become a Volunteer!
The Town of Brookhaven provides many opportunities for people who wish to make a difference by volunteering in their community. Senior Citizens’ programs offer several avenues for those who are interested in helping others, meeting new people, or having the satisfaction of bringing new experiences to people who have the time and motivation to learn.
Like to Teach?
The Rose Caracappa Center in Mt. Sinai, and our Nutrition Centers in Shoreham and Mastic Beach host a variety of classes and workshops on an ongoing basis. Call 631-476-6449 (Mt. Sinai), 631-744-1756 (Shoreham) or 631-281-7679 (Mastic Beach), if you have a special skill that you’d like to share with others.
Can You Spare 2 to 4 Hours Reaching Out to Homebound Senior Citizens?
Join the Helpline volunteers and Make Someone’s Day with a reassuring phone call. Helpline is a telephone reassurance service for isolated or homebound seniors. The program provides human contact with a daily reassurance call, letting clients know that someone is there for them. Volunteers reach out to homebound seniors with a friendly voice—asking how they’re doing, answering questions, or providing information about Town or County services. Calls are made from 6 Recreation Centers in the Town of Brookhaven in 2 different shifts: 10 am—Noon and 1 pm—3 pm. To volunteer for this program, please call 631-451-9140.
Do You Like to Help People?
Homebound residents age 60 and over receive hot meals from our Nutrition Program, which provides over 700 meals per month through our Home-Delivered Meals program. A staff of volunteers works in conjunction with our Jitney transportation program to distribute the home-delivered meals from our Nutrition Centers in Shoreham and Mastic Beach. If you would like to volunteer for this vital program, call: 631-744-1756 in Shoreham or 631-281-7679 in Mastic Beach.
Want to Make a Difference?
The Senior Citizens Advisory Commission is an independent body that advocates for our Senior constituents on issues that can impact their quality of life. While not officially a part of the Senior Citizens Division, the Commission provides valuable input and offers recommendations to the Commissioners and Director. All issues relating to senior citizens are discussed (in a non-partisan manner) and recommendations are then made.
Established in 1967, the Commission is comprised of 15 members: a Chairperson, Vice Chairperson and thirteen Senior Citizen residents from various geographic areas throughout the Town. Members are appointed by the Supervisor and the Town Board. The commission meets the third Friday of every month, excluding July and August.
