Signage
The Town of Brookhaven's Division of Signage installs and maintains all of the traffic signs and pavement markings on the 2,000 miles of roadway throughout the Town.
Each year the Division of Signage spends more than $100,000 to purchase and/or fabricate traffic signs (the Town of Brookhaven is the largest customer of the New York State Eastern Correctional Facility). There are currently more than 17,000 STOP signs in the Town and a good portion of these signs are replaced each year due to damage, vandalism and normal wear and tear. New signs, including STOP signs, speed limit signs and truck exclusion signs are also installed when traffic studies indicate the need for additional controls in particular areas.
The Division of Signage also maintains and installs pavement markings when roads are repaved or when markings become faded or damaged. These markings include double yellow centerlines, white edgelines, school crossings and railroad crossings.
