3,301 animals were found injured, brought to the shelter as strays or owner sign over for adoption in 2007.
The breakdown for these animals is as follows:
1,697 Adoptions
967 Owner Redemptions
490 Euthanized animals *
147 Animals in Adoption Center
*Of the 490 euthanized animals, 332 were rescued critically injured, or so sick that they were humanely put to sleep at a veterinarian’s recommendation and never made it to the adoption center or were to aggressive for adoption. The remaining 158 animals deemed adoptable at admittance were put to sleep due to overcrowding, illness or displaying aggression after being placed in the adoption center.
81% of all animals were adopted or redeemed by their owner.
94% of the animals deemed adoptable were placed.
Brookhaven Animal Shelter & Adoption Center only performs owner requested euthanasia to relieve the suffering of a pet when the pet's life has seriously deteriorated due to illness or injury and no other remedy is possible. Aggressive animals are also euthanized. Owner reququested euthanasia services are not included in the above numbers.
"Help the Animals Fund" a program supported by voluntary donations allows sick, neglected and injured stray animals receive necessary medical care. This program helped us achieve this 94% save rate.
My thanks to the community for its support and to the hard working shelter staff.
