Garbage Carter Changes
Please be aware of important changes in the collection of refuse & recyclables within the Town of Brookhaven.
Beginning January 2, 2009 most Brookhaven residents will be served by a new garbage carter because of a new contract that went into effect this year. Under the new contract, some residential garbage collection areas will experience a change in collection days, going from Monday/Thursday collection to Tuesday/Friday or vice versa.
Please click here to see a list of all areas that have changes in collection days.
Under this new contract, all new collection vehicles serving Brookhaven residents will run on clean and energy efficient Compressed Natural Gas. This new contract will be more efficient, save taxpayer money and be better for the environment and health of the residents of Brookhaven.
As the carters learn their new routes, the time of day when your refuse is collected may change from what you are used to. Please remember to place your garbage or recyclables at the curb the night before your scheduled pick-up day. We thank you for your patience during this transition.
You may have already received a new recycling and yard waste calendar and Throwing It Out Guide Update in the mail. If not, you should be receiving it within the next few days, or, to download an electronic version, please click here.
Changes in Yard Waste Collection
Brush and leaves can now be put out at the curb for collection on the same Yard Waste collection week. The same rules apply concerning how leaves and brush are to be put out at the curb. Residents now have the flexibility to put both brush and leaves out on the curb together for more weeks than previous years when there were separate brush weeks. You will notice on the 2009 Residential Recycling and Yard Waste Schedules that separate brush weeks have been eliminated. This will represent a savings to the Town of over one million dollars. In addition, it will allow the Town to designate three floating weeks of Yard Waste collection during weeks when leaves and/or brush are heaviest.
