Traffic Safety


The Town of Brookhaven’s Division of Traffic Safety is responsible for maintaining existing  traffic control devices and recommending the installation of traffic safety improvements (i.e., signage, road widening, road closures, etc.).

The Division of Traffic Safety provides design recommendations that aid in improving traffic safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists.  The improvements are based upon the premise of the three (3) “E’s”; Engineering, Enforcement and Education.

The Division of Traffic Safety provides such engineering services as performing traffic studies, including reviewing traffic counts and accident history.  The traffic engineer may review existing conditions and make recommendations regarding sign location, pavement width and sight obstructions.  All this information combined provides the traffic engineer with the ability to recommend the installation of signage, pavement markings, guiderail and traffic control devices.

The second “E” is enforcement.  Since the Town of Brookhaven has no law enforcement capabilities, we recommend contact your local Suffolk County Police Precinct to report speeding violations.

The third “E” is education.  Through proper signage and accurate pavement markings, the motorist is properly notified of upcoming traffic control devices and appropriate speed.  The Division of Traffic Safety also provides Defensive Driving Courses to educate the motorist of proper driver safety.
