Farmingville, NY – Supervisor Mark Lesko and Councilwoman Jane Bonner have announced that the first 100 people to adopt a pet from the Brookhaven Animal Shelter in the month of April will receive a free Pet Protection Agreement donated by the Guardians of Rescue, Legal Zoom, and Rachel Hirschfeld, an author, estate attorney, and animal advocate. A Pet Protection Agreement is a trust document that allows a pet to be cared for by someone listed by the owner should they become unable to do it due to death or other circumstances.
“I would like to thank Ms. Hirshfeld and the Guardians of Rescue for their generous contribution,” said Supervisor Lesko, “The Pet Protection Agreement is a great way for any pet owner to ensure that their pets remain in loving homes.”
Councilwoman Bonner said. “This donation will prevent many companion animals from becoming orphans that could someday be sent to the Animal Shelter. It also gives pet owners the assurance that their beloved pets will be taken care of if something were to happen.”
“My keen interest in providing guidance to pet lovers has always been to positively affect the lives of the animals that we love,” stated Ms. Hirshfeld, “My mission of providing for the uninterrupted care of our pets will give pet owners some peace of mind in case of the unforeseen.”
A Pet Protection Agreement is legally sound and valid in all fifty states. As part of the agreement, pet owners can elaborate on care instructions for their pets. It can easily be completed in 15-20 minutes without the help of an attorney. A basic Pet Protection Agreement has a value of $39.
The Brookhaven Town Animal Shelter has been very progressive in launching programs to increase adoption rates and pet retention and get animals spayed and neutered, especially focusing on the large population of Pit Bulls and Pit Mixes at the Animal Shelter.
The Animal Shelter is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. It is located at 300 Horseblock Road in Brookhaven, New York, 11719.
