Farmingville, NY – At 4:30 today, an Executive Emergency Order was signed by Acting Supervisor Kathleen Walsh for the mandatory evacuation of all Town of Brookhaven portions of Fire Island. The Brookhaven portion of Fire Island had previously been affected by the Executive Emergency Order that directed the mandatory evacuation of the South Shore communities located in the Category 1 areas of the Slosh Zone maps. That mandatory evacuation order expired today and is now being replaced with this order for only the evacuation of Town of Brookhaven portions of Fire Island. The State of Emergency for the entire Town of Brookhaven, which has been in effect since 12:00 noon on October 27 was extended earlier today.
Residents are urged to stay off Fire Island since there is no fire or emergency service, electric power or water service. There are also down power lines, trees and other extremely hazardous debris on land and in the water, and some homes, that have sustained significant damage, may be dangerous to enter. Boardwalks, docks and marinas have also sustained damage.
