Farmingville, NY – On January 4, Councilwoman Kathleen Walsh was invited to be a guest reader at New Lane Memorial Elementary School in Selden, as they kicked off their “Parents as Reading Partners” (PARP) program, “Rock ‘n Read”. PARP is a program sponsored by the New York State PTA and their units. This program asks parents to read with their children for at least fifteen minutes daily, stressing the fact that reading can be fun as well as informative.
Councilwoman Walsh read “Veterans: Heroes in Our Neighborhood,” written by Valerie Pfundstein, to the students in Mrs. Kalinowski and Ms. Babb’s 4th grade class and mentioned that she met the author at a book signing event at the Middle Country Public Library in December of last year.
“I have always enjoyed being a part of this event and the children enjoy it too,” said Councilwoman Walsh, “It’s great to see how excited the students are and it sets a bond between the home and school to encourage love of reading in our children.”
The Councilwoman donated the book, which was signed by the author, to the classroom’s library.
