Farmingville, NY – Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine made a recent visit to the New Interdisciplinary School (NIS) in Yaphank and was given a tour of the facility by Executive Director Helen Wilder (center). The Supervisor was joined by Brookhaven Local Development Corporation and Industrial Development Agency CEO Lisa Mulligan (left).
NIS a not-for profit 4410 school, was founded in 1976 to provide education and therapeutic services to children from birth to five years of age. In October 1995, with assistance from the Brookhaven Industrial Development Agency, NIS moved into its 35000 square feet building located on Sills Road in Yaphank, and expanded their services beyond preschoolers with disabilities to include: nursery school, pre-kindergarten, Universal Pre-Kindergarten and a licensed child care program. The school has an enrollment of 350 students, including 225 special needs children and over 100 employees. In 2012, the Town’s LDC assisted NIS with a refinance of nearly $3 million of both taxable and tax exempt bonds.
The Town’s Local Development Corporation board also serves as the board of the IDA. The IDA and LDC provide incentives to facilitate the acquisition, construction, reconstruction and equipping of commercial, industrial, and nonprofit projects in the Town of Brookhaven.
