They Want To Make Sure Kids Have Tools To Succeed

JULY 31, 2006, FARMINGVILLE, NY- Brookhaven Town Supervisor Brian X. Foley    and Councilwoman Connie Kepert have enlisted the support of the entire Town Board in setting set up a collection basket for school supplies in Town Hall to make sure needy youngsters have the supplies they need to succeed in school and get the tools to build themselves a better life. The basket will be in Town Hall for the entire month of August.

“I know that making ends meet here on Long Island is a hard thing to do for most families,” said Supervisor Foley. “Providing school supplies is another expense that can get lost in the shuffle, and we can’t let that happen. Kids need to have the tools they need to succeed in school, break the cycle of poverty and build themselves and their families a better future. We need to help families make the American dream a reality.

“For many in our community, just making rent is tough enough. Add to that the high cost of utilities, groceries, and gas, and it becomes near impossible for many to make ends meet. This is just our way to try and help families make sure their children are ready for school.”

“As an educator and mother of  three children, I know firsthand that supplying a child with the necessary tools for school is a costly thing,” said Councilwoman Kepert.     “We are urging members of our community who can afford to do so to donate any school supplies they can, from pens and pencils to knapsacks, notebooks, lunch boxes, crayons, calculators, erasers, and more. Let’s make this upcoming school year an enjoyable experience for all of Brookhaven’s children and affordable for those neighbors who may be having a little trouble getting by.

A school supply box will be prominently located in the lobby of Town Hall during the month of August.
