Brookhaven Town cooling centers and pools extend hours
AUGUST 1, 2006, FARMINGVILLE, NY- Brookhaven Town Supervisor Brian X. Foley has taken a number of steps to help Town of Brookhaven residents deal with the sweltering heat wave.
“We are providing cooling centers at town recreation centers, with hours extended well into the evening, as well as keeping our town pools open later and waiving fees for those pools,” said Supervisor Foley. “The Town of Brookhaven will do everything it can do to help residents cope with the insufferable heat. We are reaching out especially to our senior citizens who might not have air conditioning and may be more susceptible to health problems caused by this kind or heat.”
The town is providing several local cooling centers for residents without air conditioning. In the Town of Brookhaven, there are multiple locations where air conditioning will be provided throughout the week, including the Suffolk County Community College Selden Campus, and the town’s Mastic Recreation Center, Blue Point Recreation Center, St. Michael’s Recreation Center in Gordon Heights, New Village Recreation Center in Centereach, Mastic Beach Nutrition Center, and Shoreham Nutrition Center.
Those town recreations centers usually close at 4:30 but will stay open until 8 p.m. as long as the National Weather Service heat advisory remains in effect.
Transportation for senior citizens to the cooling centers will be provided by the Town of Brookhaven from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. To arrange transportation via Town Jitney, citizens can call 451-6122. In addition to these centers, public places such as libraries, shopping malls, and other indoor shopping centers can also function as cooling centers.
Town operated pools will also remain open for extended hours, until 9 p.m. Pool fees will be waived Tuesday evening, Wednesday and Thursday.
