Foley, Rouse, DeMarco Explain SLAP

Town Welcomes County Help in Cleaning Up Town

AUGUST 3, 2006, FARMINGVILLE, NY- Brookhaven Town Supervisor Brian X. Foley, Highway Superintendent John Rouse and Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco outlined plans for the Sheriff’s Labor Assistance Program to clean up roads in the Town of Brookhaven at a press conference Thursday at 11 a.m. in the media room at Brookhaven Town Hall.

In the SLAP program, Sheriff DeMarco utilizes non-violent prisoners to clean up roads. His crews have been working on roads in Brookhaven Town and plan much more work in the near future. In conjunction with Brookhaven Town’s “Make It Sparkle, Make It Shine” program and the ongoing clean-up efforts of the town’s Waste Management crews, SLAP is making significant inroads in the roadside litter problem here.

“When I promised to clean up Brookhaven Town, I meant that I would clean up the town in every way, from corruption, to incompetence, all the way to the roadside litter that is such an eyesore along all too many of our roadways,” said Supervisor Foley. “Brookhaven Town residents share a deep pride in their communities, and getting Sheriff’s DeMarco’s crews out to clean up the roads will go a long way toward building up that pride.

“Perhaps the good work the prisoners will be doing will also help to create a sense of community in these non-violent criminals, and help them get their lives back on track, restoring the pride in themselves and in their communities that can lead them back to productive lives.

“This is another example of the great work that can be accomplished when different levels of government cooperate to promote the public good. I salute Highway Superintendent Rouse for working with Sheriff DeMarco to get the SLAP program underway in Brookhaven Town. And, of course, I thank Sheriff DeMarco for helping us clean up Brookhaven Town.”

“As Supervisor Foley and I continue to fulfill our pledge to clean up Brookhaven, we are grateful to Sheriff DeMarco for his generous assistance,” said Highway Superintendent Rouse. “Not just as the Highway Superintendent but as a taxpayer as well, my feeling is that if our tax dollars are going to house and feed inmates, the least we can expect in return is their assistance in cleaning up our roadways.

“I am privileged to partner with Supervisor Foley and Sheriff DeMarco in addressing such an important quality of life issue for our residents.”

“The SLAP program was reinstated in January when I took office,” said Sheriff DeMarco. “These low level non-violent sentenced inmates work doing various tasks some of which actually teach them skills that they can use to help get employment when they are discharged.

“It is a win-win situation for the taxpayers and the inmates. The taxpayers get free labor that is used to assist municipalities in Suffolk County clean up roadways and parks.  The inmates put in an honest day work that instills a work ethic and a routine that will benefit them when they are released. I applaud Supervisor Foley and Highway Superintendent Rouse for taking advantage of this program.”
