Enforcement Effort Is Launched Town-Wide
AUGUST 7, 2006, FARMINGVILLE, NY- Brookhaven Town began collecting non-resident parking fees uniformly at parking lots and beaches town-wide last weekend. Fees had not been regularly collected in the past.
Residents continue to park for free at all town parks and beaches. A new non-resident parking fee schedule has been established.
The daily automobile parking fee for non-residents remains at $15. The daily fee for motorcycles belonging to non-residents has been cut to $7, less than half the former motorcycle fee of $15. The fee was cut after discussions between Parks Commissioner Brian Pratt and numerous motorcyclists using Brookhaven Town park facilities. Since two motorcycles can fit in a spot that one car would occupy, town officials decided that cutting the fee in half for motorcycles was fair.
“The failure to regularly collect non-resident parking fees at town parks has placed an unfair burden on the taxpayers of the Town of Brookhaven,” said Deputy Supervisor Jack Schnirman. “Residents pay for the maintenance and improvement of town parks in their tax payments, and it is only fair that non-residents using those parks pay their fair share to provide for the upkeep of the town’s facilities.”
The Town of Brookhaven’s fees for non-resident use of parks are lower than nearly all of the 10 towns on Long Island. At other towns on Long Island, daily parking fees run from $35 in Riverhead, to a low of $10 for a daily non-resident beach sticker in Smithtown. Some towns do not offer daily parking permits for non-residents.
“The Town of Brookhaven welcomes visitors to enjoy our parks and beaches,” said Deputy Supervisor Schnirman. “We are proud to share the beauty of our great township, and our merchants appreciate the economic boost our visitors provide. This is part of evenhanded, town-wide code enforcement, from north shore to south shore.”
