Foley & Bissonette Invite Public to ‘Barktoberfest’

Animal Shelter & Adoption Center Urge Residents to ‘Think Adoption First’

SEPTEMBER 18, 2006, FARMINGVILLE, NY- Brookhaven Town Supervisor Brian X. Foley and Councilwoman Carol A. Bissonette invite the public to the Brookhaven Animal Shelter Adoption Center’s third annual Barktoberfest & "Flea" Market/yard sale to be held at the Adoption Center on Saturday, October 7.

“The Barktoberfest will be a fun day for the entire family and a great opportunity to adopt a dog or cat from our shelter,” said Supervisor Foley. “There will be a petting zoo and face-painting for the kids, and plenty of wonderful dogs and cats to adopt as loving companions for you and your family.”

“Our Barktoberfest and ‘Flea’ Market is a wonderful opportunity for our residents to participate in our Animal Friendly Fall Celebration that demonstrates the unique and special relationship of our pets within our families,” said Councilwoman Bissonette. “It is a free community event and the perfect opportunity to expand your family by adopting a dog or cat.”

October is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog month, and the Brookhaven Animal Shelter & Adoption Center at 300 Horseblock Road in Brookhaven each year holds this event to encourage residents to "Think Adoption First."

A low cost vaccination clinic will be available from 1 to 3 p.m. for companion animals in Brookhaven Town. The event will also feature activities for children, including face-painting, a petting zoo, and demonstration by the Suffolk County Police Department K-9 Unit.
Between 2 and 3 p.m., dog contests such as World Class Tail Wagging will take place.  An adoption bonus is given for each dog and cat adopted on this day.
