Foley, Board Expand Recycling
Supervisor Hails Expansion of Program, Hours
JANUARY 17, 2007, FARMINGVILLE, NY--Brookhaven Town Supervisor Brian X. Foley has announced that the Brookhaven Town Board on January 9 approved expansion of the Town’s Electronics Recycling Program to provide businesses, schools, and other institutions with a local electronics recycling option beginning February 1. Also, free residential electronics recycling drop-off times have been expanded from two days a week to six days a week
“We have a responsibility to make recycling easier for our town residents,” said Supervisor Foley. “Given the opportunity, our residents will do the right thing and dispose of electronics properly. That is why we are expanding that opportunity for our citizens.”
Businesses, schools and other institutions can bring recyclable electronic components (see list below) to the Brookhaven Town Landfill on Horseblock Road in Yaphank, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon.
A licensed e-waste recycling company will provide transportation, safe processing, and recycling of these items, increasing both the Town’s and the business/institution’s recycling rate. Components will be safely separated into reusable metals, plastics, glass and chemical recyclables.
E-waste recycling reduces the glut to the waste stream created by the rapid turnover of electronics equipment caused by the accelerated speed of advancing technology.
A fee of $80 per ton ($.04 per lb.) will be charged, which equates to approximately $1.50 for a computer monitor. Businesses or institutions planning to recycle excessive amounts of electronic equipment should contact the Town of Brookhaven Waste Management Department in advance of delivery.
Free residential electronics recycling drop-off times have been expanded from two days a week to six days a week. Residents can now bring recyclable electronic components (see list below) to the Brookhaven Town Landfill on Horseblock Road in Yaphank, Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon, at no cost.
For further information, please check the Brookhaven Town website at Brookhaven.org, or call the Department of Waste Management at 451-6222.
Recyclable electronics include televisions, VCRs, DVD players, projectors, camcorders, radios, stereos, cell phones, pagers, PDAs, phones, answering machines, Gameboys® and other electronic handheld toys, calculators, electronic typewriters, computers, laptops, servers, mainframes, monitors, printers, scanners, modems, keyboards, computer mouse, CD ROMs, circuit boards, power supplies, and backup batteries.
