Foley Is Preserving Brookhaven’s Past

SEPTEMBER 11, 2007, FARMINGVILLE, NY
— Brookhaven Town Supervisor Brian X. Foley and the Brookhaven Parks Department recently toured Longwood Estate in Ridge to view improvements that have been made at the facility.

Improvements to the facility include the addition of an ADA compliant bathroom facility, a performance space that preserves the historical feel of the property and an information booth. There is also a new sign to give visitors information about upcoming events at the estate. This sign was created as part of an Eagle Scout Project.

Touring the improvements made at the Longwood Estate, including the new information booth, are, left to right, Assistant Brookhaven Town Parks Commissioner Bill Shilling, Parks Commissioner Jim LaCarrubba and Brookhaven Town Supervisor Brian X. Foley.

“Longwood Estate provides residents and visitors alike the opportunity to learn about our Town’s rich history,” said Supervisor Foley. “We at the Town feel that it is important to protect and preserve that history. I encourage all of our residents to visit Longwood to learn more about how our forefathers lived.”

“We in the Parks Department take great pride in our role as protectors of our Town’s historic buildings,” said Parks Commissioner Jim LaCarrubba. “Longwood Estate is a great resource for residents to learn about our Town’s history through educational workshops for students, as well as through the many events held at the facility.”

In the past few years, there has been a steady increase in the amount of year-round activity at Longwood Estate. This is due in large part to the fact that the facility has been opened to residents through school tours and events such as the annual Longwood Country Fair, the Halloween Festival and Santa Comes to Longwood.

Restoration of the main house and barn will continue in the coming year. Additionally, the Parks Department will spend close to $250,000 to replace the roofs of all of the buildings.
