Foley Honors Bellport Boxer

SEPTEMBER 21, 2007, FARMINGVILLE, NEW YORK
– The nearly 200 people who attended last night’s 3rd Annual Town of Brookhaven Small Business Advisory Council “Helping Your Business Thrive Seminar” hosted by Supervisor Brian X. Foley received a special treat when the Supervisor presented Adam Willett with a Proclamation recognizing his success and achievements as a world ranked amateur heavyweight boxer.

Brookhaven Town Supervisor Brian X. Foley presented  Bellport native and U.S. Olympic Boxing Team alternate Adam Willett with a certificate in recognition of his accomplishments.

Adam is a life-long Bellport resident. A graduate of Bellport High School, where he starred in football and track, Adam has been ably guided in his boxing efforts by his father George and Coach Eddie Murphy, who runs the Atlantic-Veteran Boxing Club where Adam trains.

Adam was National PAL Champ in 2005 and 2006 and National U.S. Champ in 2006 and represented the United States in the 2007 Pan-America Games. In 2008, he will serve as the 2nd alternate on the U.S. Olympic Boxing team for the Beijing Olympics.

“Adam is a real-life success story,” said Supervisor Foley. “Through his hard work and dedication, he has become one of the top young boxers in the entire country. That kind of drive and hard work is what small business owners display every day as they make their businesses thrive and grow.”

Coach Murphy in speaking about Adam and his own efforts to run the Atlantic-Veterans Boxing Club tied the story to the theme of the evening, “Helping Your Business Thrive.”

“Both Adam as a competitor and myself as a small business owner understand that the true nature of success comes from perseverance in tough times and if we can do it so can you,” Coach Murphy said.

The Small Business Advisory Council is a volunteer organization that serves the needs of the small business community through education, outreach and seminars. Supervisor Foley in recognizing their efforts spoke of the “unique value of small business as one of the key engines of not just the local but the national economy.”
