Duck Player, Mascot To Visit Shelter

NOVEMBER 26, 2007, FARMINGVILLE, NEW YORK – Brookhaven Town Supervisor Brian X. Foley and Councilwoman Carol Bissonette have announced that Rob Cafiero of the Long Island Ducks and Ducks mascot QuackerJack will appear at the Brookhaven Town Animal Shelter on Saturday, December 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to help promote the Home for the Holidays Dog Adoption Campaign. They will sign autographs, greet fans and take photos with fans.

“We welcome the assistance of the Long Island Ducks in helping get the word out about the many wonderful animals up for adoption at the shelter,” said Supervisor Foley. “For many families, this is the perfect time of year to bring a pet home for the holidays. I encourage residents to pay a visit.”

“I’m delighted to have the support of the Long Island Ducks and Rob Cafiero to help us promote our ‘Home for the Holiday Adoption Program,’ ” said Councilwoman Bissonette. “At this time of year and throughout the year, I encourage our residents to open their hearts and homes to a new family pet. Please help us light up our ‘Tree of Hope’ so that it will shine even brighter with each adoption that takes place.”

The Home for the Holidays program is designed to increase awareness of homeless pets available for adoption at the shelter. A “Tree of Hope” stands outside the shelter. After each animal goes home, a bulb will be lit. Hours for the center are 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.

If you are unable to adopt a pet at this time, you can help a homeless pet heal by contributing to the Help the Animals Fund. Visit the center’s website at http://www.brookhaven.org/animalshelter for more information.

Lifelong Massapequa Park resident Rob Cafiero returns for his third season with the Ducks, his sixth in professional baseball. In 2006, Rob hit a career best .270 in 111 at-bats, driving in 19 runs in 42 games at first base. Rob also saw time on the mound, pitching in 10 games for the Ducks, amassing a 3.38 ERA in 16 innings of work.

The 27-year-old former Villanova Wildcat has shown great talent in the field as well. He has made only four errors in two seasons with Ducks, all of them in 2005. Rob's best season at the plate came as a member of the Road Warriors of the Atlantic League in 2004, when he set career highs in home runs (10), RBI (47), hits (82), doubles (10), runs (26), total bases (122) and slugging percentage (.360).

The Massapequa Park resident was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 32nd round of the 2002 Major League Baseball draft.
