Two Businesses Move to Empire Zone

DECEMBER 10, 2007, FARMINGVILLE, NY – Brookhaven Town Supervisor Brian X. Foley on Tuesday, December 11 presided over the groundbreaking ceremonies for the two latest companies to move into the Town’s Empire Zone, continuing the unprecedented growth of businesses and jobs in the Empire Zone over the past two years.

Breaking ground for the new Torino Industries facility at the Empire Zone in Bellport on Tuesday are, left to right, John Byrne, representing Councilwoman Connie Kepert, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Brian X. Foley, Company President Vincent Sette, Vice President Keith Passanante, Project Manager Kevin Mulligan, and Division of Economic Development Director Ray Donnelly.

“I am pleased to welcome Torino Industries and DAS Contracting to the Brookhaven community,” said Supervisor Foley. “This is just the latest example of the unprecedented growth in Empire Zone businesses over the past two years. We continue to add businesses to the economic structure of Brookhaven Town and we continue to bring good-paying jobs for our Brookhaven residents.”

Torino Industries broke ground on a 26,000 sq. ft. building on 3 acres at 11:45 a.m. at Pinehurst Drive, Bellport (Brookhaven Industrial Park). Torino is a manufacturer of high-end architectural and ornamental metal work. They will create an additional 19 jobs over the next 5 years.

The story of Torino Industries is a “true Horatio Alger story,” said Supervisor Foley. In 1971, Vincent Elogio Sette immigrated to the United States in pursuit of the “American Dream” like countless immigrants before him, Supervisor Foley said.

Four short years later, in 1975, after having spent four years as the leadman with several small steel fabricators in the New York City area, Vincent decided it was time to set out on his own. He and his brother started Sette Bros., which eventually became Torino Industrial, Inc. In this same year, Vincent also managed to purchase a building in Jamaica, Queens that still serves as Torino Industrial’s headquarters.

The Brookhaven Division of Economic Development successfully recruited Torino Industries from New York City, the second company the division captured from the city in the past two years.

Torino manufactures high-end architectural and ornamental metal work, doing work mostly for government entities including the MTA, LIRR, New York City and Stony Brook University.

DAS Contracting & Globo in Verde broke ground on a 20,000 sq. ft. building on 2 acres on Platinum Ct., Medford (South Silver Industrial Park). DAS has been in business since 1987 and is a full service general contracting firm. They will create an additional 14 jobs over the next 5 years.

They are currently planning to integrate "Green Building Techniques" into all aspects of their business by creating a new company, Globo in Verde. Globo's mission will be to educate, market and distribute "Green" products to the building trades.

Brookhaven Division of Economic Development successfully recruited DAS from Nassau County, the second Nassau company this year to relocate in the Empire Zone.

“My Economic Development team led by Director Raymond Donnelly and Assistant Director Anthony Figliola has done an extraordinary job of attracting quality businesses to Brookhaven Town,” said Supervisor Foley. “And Economic Development Manager Yves Michel works to make sure that new jobs are going to Brookhaven Town residents.

“We have a great team in place at Economic Development, a team that is doing a great job for the people and economy of Brookhaven Town.”
