Kepert Delivers $2,000 to Soup Kitchens
The soaring cost for home heating oil this year has had a ripple effect in our local economy, and for some people that has meant making a choice between food or warmth.
“My office received numerous calls since the cold weather hit and it is very sad to see how many folks simply cannot afford to pay the oil man and put food on the table at the same time,” says Democratic Councilwoman Connie Kepert. In one instance, a senior citizen told Kepert’s office that she had to hand the balance of her monthly Social Security check to her oil deliveryman, leaving no money for anything else.
In response, Councilwoman Kepert was able to provide two area soup kitchens with enhancement grants totaling $2000.
Thee Island Inn of Middle Island located at 645 Middle Country Road, Middle Island received an enhancement grant worth $1,000, and the Food Pantry at the Jefferson Temple in North Bellport located at 333 Brookhaven Avenue in Bellport also received $1,000. Councilwoman Kepert is asking for the general public to help out as well.
“If you can, please keep those of us who are less fortunate in mind this winter and donate food or money to a local food pantry or soup kitchen,” she said.
The Town of Brookhaven Senior Division is also accepting donations at their Nutrition Centers at 369 Neighborhood Road in Mastic Beach, 281-7679, or at Defense Hill Road in Shoreham phone, 744-1756. |
