Calling it one of the most constructive, pro-taxpayer initiatives ever by the Town Board, Supervisor Brian Foley thanked the members of the town council for their unanimous support to form a GPS Vehicle Tracking System Implementation Committee. The resolution, which was initially tabled by the board on December 20, 2007, was approved 7-0 at the January 22, 2008 meeting.
“This GPS Vehicle Tracking System Implementation Committee will be charged with developing the important policy recommendations that will guide this administration in rolling out this key initiative,” commented Supervisor Foley. “I am very pleased that, after much dialogue and further study, we can now move ahead with unanimous consent.”
The committee will consist of 13 members: the Town Supervisor; the Superintendent of Highways; two town council representatives; representatives of the three union bargaining units; the commissioners of the departments of Public Safety, Waste Management, and Parks & Recreation; and, the directors of Vehicle Control, Management & Research, and Information Technology.
According to Foley, the installation of GPS into town vehicles will allow a greater level of inventory control and more accountability for the town workforce, in addition to saving taxpayer dollars.
“GPS systems have proven to be ‘technological watchdogs’ in the private and public sectors, rooting out waste and allowing the better allocation of resources, which can ultimately reduce the size of the Town’s fleet,” said Councilwoman Jane Bonner, Town Council Liaison to the Department of Public Safety, which includes the Division of Vehicle Control. “I am pleased this committee will begin an open dialogue on this issue.”
The GPS Vehicle Tracking System Implementation Committee will make policy recommendations including a determination of what Town Vehicles will receive GPS product hardware, what type of tracking reports will be generated, and who will have access to the information and reports. Supervisor Foley asked that the Committee issue its report as soon as possible.
“I am delighted that we can now move ahead with this important initiative,” commented Councilwoman Connie Kepert.
Added Councilman Steve Fiore-Rosenfeld, “This Committee will allow all stakeholders to come to the table, voice their concerns, and ultimately reach an agreement on how to proceed.”
