FEBRUARY 19, 2008, FARMINGVILLE, NY -- Brookhaven Town Councilwoman Jane Bonner is urging homeowners in her District to apply for the STAR property exemption. Councilwoman Bonner noted that homeowners who are eligible for both the Enhanced and Basic STAR exemptions must apply by March 3rd. Councilwoman Bonner serves as the Town Board’s Liaison to the Brookhaven Town Assessor’s office.
“As a homeowner I know the difficulties that burdensome school property taxes place on the shoulders of hard-working taxpayers,” Councilwoman Bonner said. “The STAR exemption has helped homeowners save hundreds of thousands of dollars throughout our area. With The March 3rd deadline quickly approaching, I’m urging all homeowners who qualify for both Enhanced and Basic STAR to get their applications in on time.”
Under Enhanced STAR senior citizens must be 65 years of age or turn 65 during 2008 and have an adjusted gross income of no greater than $70,650.00 as shown on the 2006 tax return. The Enhanced STAR exemption results in an approximate tax savings of $1,500.00 for property owned by a husband and wife, or by siblings, one of them must be 65-years of age to qualify.
The Basic STAR exemption is for anyone who owns a home and their home is their primary residence. There is no age or income limitation and the tax savings is approximately $1,000.00.
The Town passed the Cold War Veterans exemption. This is an exemption applied against Town and County taxes for men and women who served in the armed services during non-war time periods between September 2, 1945 and December 26, 1991. The applicant must provide the Assessor with a completed application, a copy of the Cold War certificate or DD214.
All exemption applications must be received by the Assessor on or before March 3rd, without exception. If you mail your exemption application, it must be post marked no later than March 3rd, and we recommend that it be mailed certified return receipt requested.
Councilwoman Bonner and Brookhaven Town Tax Assessor James Ryan will be present to ensure Senior Citizens file their Star Exemptions on time. For additional information please contact Councilwoman Bonner’s office at (631) 451-6964.
