ELECTRONICS RECYCLING COMES TO BROOKHAVEN TOWN

On September 24th, the Town of Brookhaven began providing residents with a free drop-off recycling program to remove spent consumer electronics (e-waste) such as computer components, TV’s, phones, electronic games, calculators, and VCR’s from the waste stream.

Residents can recycle a variety of items (see list below) at the Brookhaven Town Landfill on Horseblock Road in Yaphank. The drop-off site, located next to the STOP Household Hazardous Waste drop off area, will be open on Wednesday and Saturday mornings until October 26 and on Saturday mornings between November 1 and April 1, 2006. Wednesdays will again be added to the schedule beginning April 1 st.

A licensed e-waste recycling company will provide transportation, safe processing, and recycling of these items, saving taxpayers the significant cost of disposal by incineration and increasing the Town’s recycling rate.

E-waste recycling reduces the glut to the waste stream created by the rapid turnover of electronics equipment caused by the accelerated speed of advancing technology.

Components will be separated into reusable metals, plastics, glass and chemical recyclables. For further information, please check the Brookhaven Town website at Brookhaven.org, or call the Department of Waste Management at 451-6222.
