FARMINGVILLE, NY - Brookhaven Town Tax Receiver Louis Marcoccia is asking for the public’s help in returning over $177,000 in tax overpayments to Brookhaven Town property owners.

The Tax Receiver announced a new web page on the Town’s website listing property owners who have overpaid their property taxes, and are due money from the Town of Brookhaven.

"I will not allow the Town to reclaim this money until we go through an absolutely exhaustive measure to give the money back," said Marcoccia said. "It's not our money. It belongs to the property owners.

The Office of the Receiver of Taxes has identified a number refund checks issued to property owners who overpaid their property taxes over the past five years that have not been redeemed. Mr. Marcoccia, had his staff compile a listing of these funds in an effort to return this money to eligible taxpayers. The list is sorted alphabetically by payee’s last name or company name.

“This process is being instituted in keeping with my pledge to the taxpayers of Brookhaven that I would create and maintain an open transparent office while increasing efficiency through the use of technology,” said Marcoccia. “I will use all technical means available, from website in addition to a simple letter informing the taxpayer, that they are eligible to receive this money.”

If a taxpayer identifies a refund that they may be entitled to they should contact the Office of the Receiver of Taxes at (631) 451-9009 for further information.

“I have formed a special unit in my office to ‘bird-dog’ this project. This unit will be responsible for seeking out the taxpayers on this and future listings and assisting them in whatever way possible through the process of dispensing the funds,” said Marcoccia. “I intend to meet my legal and moral obligation to inform taxpayers who have been issued a refund and have for whatever reason not taken appropriate action to recover the funds.”
