DOGS ARE BANNED AT WEST MEADOW BEACH IN SETAUKET
APRIL 12, 2006, FARMINGVILLE, NY –The Town of Brookhaven has discontinued its interim policy permitting limited access for dogs at West Meadow Beach in Setauket.

A condition of this policy was to assess public compliance with its three provisions: Dogs were to be restricted to Trustees Road and leashed at all times, and owners were required to pick up dog waste. Based on numerous visits and observations by town staff over the past year, there was widespread non-compliance with the provisions.  Dogs were often observed off the Trustees Road running unrestrained along the beach, in the dunes, and in the water.  Dog waste was repeatedly observed along the edges of the road, in the un-vegetated areas where the cottages were once located and on the beach.

A key management objective of the town at West Meadow Beach is to protect federally endangered and protected resident and migratory bird species and to maintain and enhance the habitat upon which they depend. The town has been doing this in close cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Continued dog use at West Meadow Beach, especially given the widespread non-compliance with the interim policy, is antithetical to this goal.
