Brookhaven Adds 32-Foot Workboat

MAY 3, 2006, FARMINGVILLE, NY – Supervisor Brian X. Foley and Commissioner of Aviation and Transportation Jim LaCarrubba announced the acquisition of a 32-foot PacCat workboat, the newest addition to Brookhaven’s fleet, on Wednesday at a press conference at Port Jefferson Marina at noon.

This multi-function boat will be vital to Supervisor Foley’s vision for cleaning up Brookhaven’s beaches, enforcing the Town Code, and ensuring the safety of harbors in the north shore communities represented by Councilmen Steve Fiore-Rosenfeld and Kevin McCarrick, who have strongly supported the purchase of the boat. It will be used in both Port Jefferson and Mt. Sinai harbors.

Among the tasks that will be accomplished using the new vessel are:

  • Environmental Protection: The vessel is a landing craft capable of beaching itself, allowing access to normally inaccessible shorelines for harbor clean-up projects.
  • Code Enforcement: The boat will give the Town an ability to impound illegal moorings on a timely basis.
  • Safety: The boat will be vital to the Town’s ability to manage, maintain, and place channel buoys. Its towing ability will aid in emergency situations, where power and strength are needed to rescue a stranded boat or crew.

“When I said I was going to clean up Brookhaven, I didn’t only mean on land and in Town Hall – the purchase of this boat will be cost-effective way to clean up Brookhaven’s precious harbors,” Supervisor Brian X. Foley said.

“This boat will be a dramatic improvement in efficiency for the Division of Harbors and Waterways in its ability to place buoys and moorings in a safe and timely manner,” said Commissioner LaCarrubba.
