Deputy Supervisor/Councilwoman Kathleen Walsh Announces Donation of Town Property to Build Home for Returning Veteran
October 5, 2011

Home for Returning Veteran

Farmingville, NY – On September 22, Deputy Supervisor/Councilwoman Kathleen Walsh (pictured) announced the Town’s closing on a parcel of property located on Clarendon Road in Lake Ronkonkoma to be used by the Long Island Builders Institute’s (LIBI) 501c3 program, Long Island Home Builders Care Development Corporation. The deed to the property, which was given to the Town by Suffolk County under the 72h Affordable Housing Program was then transferred to LIBI. The property will be used to build a new home for a returning Iraq and Afghanistan War veteran.

Deputy Supervisor/Councilwoman Walsh said, “It is a winning business agreement for the veteran and his family, the Third Council District, and the tax rolls. The family will be providing the revenue the town needs and the town will be providing the veteran a permanent home for himself and his family. It is located in the Sachem School District where the residents are a part of a hardworking tight knit community. They will welcome a new homeowner.”

The veteran, who will buy the home, will be chosen by lottery after meeting the requirements of the HOME Down Payment Assistance Program. The total construction cost of the new home will be paid for by the LIBI, who will take into consideration the special needs of the veteran, and make the home move-in ready. Through the donation of land by the Town and reduced charges for materials and labor, the homes will be awarded to the selected veteran at a price they can afford. The Veteran must be a first-time home buyer and currently live or work in Suffolk County.
