Farmingville, NY – Supervisor Mark Lesko and Councilman Dan Panico have announced the results of Operation Clean Sweep in Council District 6 in Mastic, which was launched on September 9. “Operation Clean Sweep” is a coordinated program spearheaded by the Town’s Quality of Life Task Force with the goal of improving the quality of life throughout Brookhaven.

The Operation Clean Sweep target area in Mastic is bordered on the north by Patchogue Avenue, the south by Meadowmere Avenue, the east by Mastic Road, and the west by Floyd Road.

Over the course of Operation Clean Sweep in Mastic, Town employees:

  • Repaired or replaced 259 street signs
  • Repaired 34 streetlights
  • Trimmed 49 trees
  • Removed 1 ton of trash and debris
The Quality of Life Task Force also issued over 100 notices to residents for a range of issues including litter, unregistered vehicles and parking on lawns. Many have already been corrected by the property owners. In addition, a number of appearance tickets were issued for violations of town codes.

“Once again, we have seen great success with Operation Clean Sweep. I thank our Quality of Life Task Force for their work with the Departments Waste Management and Traffic Safety to clean up this neighborhood in Mastic.” said Supervisor Mark Lesko, “Through Operation Clean Sweep, we will continue to clean-up our Town, one neighborhood at a time.”

“Operation Clean Sweep made a noticeable difference regarding the removal of trash, replacement of lights and replacement of missing or vandalized signs,” commented Brookhaven Town Councilman Dan Panico. “The effort to aggressively root out illegal and substandard housing will continue, along with similar efforts to ensure that our neighborhoods are clean and safe. I thank everyone in our Waste Management and Traffic Safety Departments for their work.”

Supervisor Lesko established the Quality of Life Task Force in June of 2009 to aggressively enforce the Town code to prosecute serial offenders, eliminate blight in neighborhoods, and shutdown suburban slumlords. Between 2008 and 2010 fines levied on code enforcement violations increased by 255%. Fines are levied through tickets issued to property owners with properties that have seriously unsafe or hazardous conditions.

Previous Operation Clean Sweeps were held earlier this year in Council District 3 in Selden and Council District 2 in Rocky Point. Most recently, there have been Operation Clean Sweeps in Council District 5 in Medford and Council District 1 in Port Jefferson Station. Operation Clean Sweep in Council District 4 will take place the week of October 23.

If residents believe that a property is in violation of any Town of Brookhaven codes, they can call 451-TOWN to file a complaint. To learn more about Operation Clean Sweep, visit www.brookhaven.org.
