Farmingville, NY – Supervisor Mark Lesko and Councilman Tim Mazzei have announced the results of Operation Clean Sweep in Medford, which was launched on September 23. “Operation Clean Sweep” is a coordinated program spearheaded by the Town’s Quality of Life Task Force with the goal of improving the quality of life throughout Brookhaven.

The Operation Clean Sweep target area in Medford is bordered on the north by Railroad Avenue, south by Southhaven Avenue, east by Oregon Avenue, and west by Old Medford Avenue.

Over the course of Operation Clean Sweep in Medford, Town employees:

  • Swept all streets
  • Replaced 137 street signs
  • Repaired or replaced 66 streetlights
  • Removed over 2000 lbs.of trash and debris
The Quality of Life Task Force also issued 35 notices to residents for a wide range of violations, including unregistered vehicles, litter, parking on the front lawns and boats in the front yard. Approximately 30 appearance tickets will be issued to violators for non-compliance and for illegal multi-family houses. Many residents have cooperated with the Town to correct the violations and come into compliance with Town code.

“Operation Clean Sweep has been successful in every neighborhood that our Quality of Life Task Force has targeted,” said Supervisor Lesko. “The Task Force’s actions during Operation Clean Sweep greatly improved the quality of life for the residents of Brookhaven Town. The Quality of Life Task Force will continue to enforce the code throughout Brookhaven.”

“I commend our Quality of Life Task Force for all the work they do to make a difference in the lives of so many of our residents,” said Councilman Tim Mazzei, who represents Council District 5. “I look forward to continuing this effort to clean up neighborhoods in my district and other areas of the Town.”

Supervisor Lesko established the Quality of Life Task Force to aggressively enforce the Town code, eliminate blight in neighborhoods, shutdown suburban slumlords, and prosecute serial offenders. Between 2008 and 2010, fines levied on code enforcement violations increased by 255%. Fines are levied through tickets issued to property owners with properties that have seriously unsafe or hazardous conditions.

At the request of Supervisor Lesko and the Town Board, the New York State Office of Court Administration established the Brookhaven Community Court in 2010. It is a special court that is part of the Sixth District Court in Patchogue dedicated to handling proceedings alleging violations of Brookhaven town ordinances and affecting the quality of life of local residents.

If residents believe that a property is in violation of any Town of Brookhaven codes, they can call 451-TOWN to file a complaint.
