Wheelchair Football Game

Farmingville, NY – The Wheelchair Sports Federation and The Town of Brookhaven will host the Fifth Annual Wheelchair Football Game on Saturday, November 5th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Diamond in the Pines Park located on Route 112 in Coram, just north of the intersection of County Road 83. The participating teams are sponsored by the New York Jets and Giants. There is no charge to attend the game and Chili’s Bar & Grill is donating food for all in attendance. Former New York Jets and Giants players have also been invited to attend.

“The Town of Brookhaven is proud to host the Wheelchair Football game. Every one of these players is a great athlete who has overcome a disability and works hard at the sport,” said Supervisor Mark Lesko. “Their determination and spirit on the gridiron is an inspiration to us all.”

Deputy Supervisor / Councilwoman Kathleen Walsh said, “I have been following the Wheelchair Sports Federation for many years and I am always impressed with how competitive the games are. I look forward to being there on Saturday with all the fans, friends and family to cheer on these amazing athletes.”

The wheelchair football game is played on a hard-surface field built to accommodate the players’ wheelchairs. Six person teams face off on an 80-yard field; play two, twenty-minute halves; and “tackle” with a one-hand touch above the waist. Scoring and penalties are similar to NFL-style football. The Town of Brookhaven also sponsors wheelchair basketball, weight lifting, bowling, softball, hand cycling and tennis.
