Farmingville, NY – Supervisor Mark Lesko and Councilman Steve Fiore-Rosenfeld have announced the results of Operation Clean Sweep in Port Jefferson Station, which was launched on October 12. “Operation Clean Sweep” is a coordinated program spearheaded by the Town’s Quality of Life Task Force with the goal of improving the quality of life throughout Brookhaven.

The Operation Clean Sweep target area in Port Jefferson Station is bordered on the north by Susan Road and Clinton Avenue, the east by Bicycle Path and on the west by Old Town Road and Terryville Road.

Over the course of Operation Clean Sweep in Port Jefferson Station, Town employees:

  • Replaced or repaired 108 street signs
  • Replaced or repaired 35 streetlights
  • Trimmed 15 trees
  • Removed nearly 2 tons of trash and debris

The Quality of Life Task Force also issued 58 notices to residents for a wide range of violations, including unregistered vehicles, litter, parking on the front lawns and boats in the front yard. Approximately 30 appearance tickets will be issued to violators for non-compliance and for illegal multi-family houses. Many residents have cooperated with the Town to correct the violations and come into compliance with Town code.

Supervisor Mark Lesko said, “Operation Clean sweep was a great success in Port Jefferson Station, nearly two tons of garage was picked up and hundreds of street signs and street lights were repaired thanks to the work by our Quality of Life Task Force. Through their day-to-day efforts, they are making great strides in cleaning up properties, closing illegal multi-family homes, and cracking down on those who violate our Town codes.”

“Operation Clean Sweep is another opportunity for our township to show focused care and commitment to improving our residents’ quality of life. As the Councilman representing Port Jefferson Station, I have been working closely with the civic leaders of Port Jefferson Station / Terryville and listening carefully to their concerns,” said Councilman Steve Fiore-Rosenfeld. “With our town inter-departmental efforts including our Town’s Law, Traffic Safety, Streetlighting, Waste Management and Highway departments we had 108 signs replaced, 35 streetlights repaired, numerous trees trimmed at intersections, nearly two tons of garbage collected and our Law Department has issued a significant number of violation notices as well. I hope that this effort shows the Port Jefferson Station community that we are listening and working hard to protect the quality of life of their families.”

Supervisor Lesko established the Quality of Life Task Force to aggressively enforce the Town code, eliminate blight in neighborhoods, shutdown suburban slumlords, and prosecute serial offenders. Between 2008 and 2010, fines levied on code enforcement violations increased by 255%. Fines are levied through tickets issued to property owners with properties that have seriously unsafe or hazardous conditions.

At the request of Supervisor Lesko and the Town Board, the New York State Office of Court Administration established the Brookhaven Community Court in 2010. It is a special court that is part of the Sixth District Court in Patchogue dedicated to handling proceedings alleging violations of Brookhaven Town ordinances and affecting the quality of life of local residents.

If residents believe that a property is in violation of any Town of Brookhaven codes, they can call 451-TOWN to file a complaint.
