Farmingville, NY – Recently Councilwoman Connie Kepert met with members of the Torch Club from Boys and Girls Club of the Bellport area. The focus of the group is to develop community leadership skills. The youth sat down with the Councilwoman at Town Hall to hear about her path to becoming an elected official.

The Councilwoman spoke about her service as a civic leader, as the former president of the Middle Island Civic, ABCO and the Longwood Alliance. “A strong civic leader identifies problems that impact the quality of life for the community’s residents and identifies strategies to solve or improve such problems,” stated Councilwoman Kepert. The group had some questions for the Councilwoman, including “How will my grades advance me as a leader?” The Councilwoman, who also teaches at Longwood High School responded, “Good grades reflect your understanding and knowledge of a subject and it shows that you are willing to put forth the effort to learn and grow.”

The group’s leader, Tanisha Carpenter commented, “After the meeting, the young people really enjoyed it, and returned to the club with a wave of motivation.” Councilwoman Kepert concluded, “It’s always my pleasure to meet and talk with young people about getting involved with their community.”
