Farmingville, NY – On February 14, Supervisor Mark Lesko and Councilman Dan Panico announced the launch of the Recyclebank School Challenge, a new program designed to build awareness and education for recycling in Brookhaven. With Recyclebank, people earn rewards for green actions. The Town is spreading the word about Recyclebank so people recycle more and at the same time give students the opportunity to bring recycling to Eastport South Manor schools.
“The response to Recyclebank has been very enthusiastic throughout the Town, especially from students who have a great awareness of the benefits of recycling,” said Supervisor Lesko,“They not only spread the word at school, but they bring the message back home to their families. I want to thank the students for stepping up and doing their part to recycle more.”
"It is always great to see young people get involved by working to improve our communities," commented Brookhaven Town Councilman Dan Panico. "Today I joined with the Eastport-South Manor Green Team and Recyclebank to kick off the Town of Brookhaven's school recycling initiative."
Samra Brouk, Recyclebank Community Outreach Manager said, “We are very excited about starting a program with the Eastport South Manor school district. Anybody knows that change begins and ends with young people, so it is our hope that the students will take home the message of recycling to their parents and communities, as well as the advantages of signing up for Recyclebank, which rewards people for taking green actions like recycling. By taking these small steps, like recycling, the Town of Brookhaven and Recyclebank believe that we can create outstanding impact in this community.”
Starting February 14, students at Eastport South Manor school district will encourage people—friends, family, and neighbors—to register for Recyclebank through their customized web page. www.recyclebank.com/esm. The Junior/Senior High School Green Team will be presenting the program to each of the elementary schools to teach them about the importance of recycling and how their parents can sign up for Recyclebank, and start earning rewards for their recycling efforts. The students have a goal of one registration per student. As a thank you for participating, each school will receive a three yard recycling container and free pick up by the Town of Brookhaven to start recycling paper. The program at Eastport South Manor school district ends on March 14.
