Farmingville, NY – On Saturday, February 2 Supervisor Ed Romaine and Deputy Supervisor Dan Panico joined more than 400 residents at the Landfill who were there to take advantage of the Town’s offer of free Firewood. The wood is part of the massive amount of debris that the Town collected in the aftermath of Super Storm Sandy. Supervisor Romaine and Deputy Supervisor Panico also leant a hand by manning a chain saw to cut wood and helping residents load their vehicles. The Town's Department of Waste Management estimates that residents picked up approximately 150,000 pounds (75 tons) of free firewood.

Supervisor Romaine said, “This was such a success and it was great to see so many people at the Landfill who were very thankful that the Town was doing this for them. Super Storm Sandy caused a tremendous amount of damage and made life difficult for everybody, but I’m happy that we were able to take what was a devastating event, and as a result, do something positive for our residents.”

Dan Panico said, “The turnout for our first free wood event was far in excess of anything we could imagine. I look forward to our next event on Saturday, February 9th and know that this free firewood will help a great deal of residents heat their homes during this cold weather. It was my pleasure to lend a hand and help make this event a success. I want to also commend the hard working waste management and parks employees who worked in the cold to make this wood available.”

The Town will hold a second Free Firewood Day at the Landfill this Saturday, February 9 from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon. Residents can pick up the firewood at the Brush Drop Off at the Landfill. The free firewood is for Brookhaven residents only and no commercial vehicles will be permitted.

The Brookhaven Town Landfill is located at 350 Horseblock Road in Yaphank and normal hours of operation are Monday through Friday 7:00 am to 3:00 pm and Saturday from 7:00 am to 12:00 pm. Residents are asked to call 451-TOWN for more information.
