BROOKHAVEN TOWN COUNCIL BANS BOTTLED WATER.

MARCH 24, 2008, FARMINGVILLE, NY -- Brookhaven Town Councilwoman Connie Kepert today announced agreement among Town Board members to replace bottled water at all Council functions with tap water, served in pitchers. This “step back” to an earlier time is part of the Council’s broad efforts to cut pollution, limit litter, save money, and reduce greenhouse gasses.

Ms. Kepert explained the benefits of banning bottle water

Ms. Kepert explained the benefits of banning bottle water, “We save vast quantities of oil (used to make the plastic bottles), reduce the greenhouse gases released in their production, and no long have to worry whether the bottles are recycled.”

“Besides,” she continued, “our tap water is as pure and wholesome as anything found in a bottle, and it costs a whole lot less.” (Bottled water costs in excess of 1,000 times the price of Suffolk County Water Authority tap water, which is regularly rated among the best in the entire country.)

Town Supervisor Brian X. Foley enthusiastically supported the idea. “While this is a small step in terms of the number of bottles, the Town strongly supported the drive in the state legislature to pass the ‘The Bigger, Better Bottle Bill’ to enhance water bottle recycling. This change is just another way we’re doing out part.”

“This sets a good example for people to follow,” Mr. Foley concluded.
