CENTEREACH, NY – Brookhaven Supervisor Brian X. Foley and Councilwoman Kathleen Walsh today announced the completion of a parking lot improvement project at the Centereach Veterans of Foreign War Post #4927 as part of an agreement between the Town and the veterans’ organization.
Under the agreement, Brookhaven Town will gain access for residents to the lot to accommodate overflow parking for the Town’s Centereach Recreation Park and Baseball fields. In consideration for use of the parking lot, and to ensure the safety and welfare of Town residents and the general public, the Town made drainage, paving and striping improvements to the parking lot at VFW Post, located on Horseblock Road in Centereach. The VFW will maintain the parking lot property.
“By partnering in this effort, the Town was able to gain much needed parking, and save thousands of taxpayer dollars by avoiding the cost of building an expanded parking lot at our park,” said Councilwoman Walsh, who sponsored the resolution for the agreement, which was approved unanimously by the Town Board on June 17. “At the same time, we were able to provide a benefit for the veterans of our community.”
“This is project a win-win for everyone,” said Supervisor Foley. “I want to commend Councilwoman Walsh for bringing this initiative forward to the Town Board, and Parks Commissioner Ed Morris and his staff for a job well done.”
“The members of VFW Post #4927 were happy to work cooperatively with the Town on this project for the benefit of both our members and the residents of Brookhaven,” said Dennis Sullivan, Commander of the VFW Post.
