Residents Challenged to Create Art Using Garbage in the Town’s 2nd Annual Objects de Garbage Contest

FARMINGVILLE, NY
- Working on the principle of when given a lemon, make lemonade, Brookhaven Town Officials are challenging town residents to find new uses for that most expendable item--garbage.

In a contest sponsored by the Town’s Department of Waste Management, Brookhaven residents are challenged to create something useful, artistic, humorous, or educational out of their household waste. The contest, entitled Objects de Garbage, is open to all residents. Judging will take place at the Brookhaven Town Country Fair at the Longwood Estate in Ridge on September 6 and 7.

“This contest is a challenge to residents to re-think the value of what we throw away,” said Supervisor Foley.

“Residents are asked to re-use and recycle waste items into useful items, art, sculpture, collages or assemblages. Prizes will be awarded for most artistic, useful, humorous and educational works of art,” said Councilman Timothy Mazzei, liaison to the Department of Waste Management.

Items must be constructed from clean used waste material and the finished item must be no larger than 2’ x 2’ x 2’.

Entry forms must be submitted online or postmarked no later than August 29 to the Town’s Department of Waste Management at One Independence Hill in Farmingville.
The actual items must be submitted Friday, September 5 between 1 and 4:30 p.m. or Saturday, September 6 before 11 a.m. to the Department of Waste Management Exhibit at the Brookhaven Town Country Fair.

The contest will be judged by a committee of fairgoing “garbologists.”

For information and registration forms, call 451-TOWN (8696), or register online at brookhaven.org.
