Quality of Life Taskforce Acts on Search Warrant...

Farmingville, NY - On March 16, 2010, Town of Brookhaven Quality of Life Task Force acted on search warrants for a single family dwelling that had been converted to an illegal three family home and rooming house located at 425 Terryville Road, Port Jefferson Station.

The Town Law Department Investigators issued home owner Redis Calix eight misdemeanor tickets for the illegally converted home that served as a dwelling for at least 13 occupants. Town Building Inspectors issued the required violation notices for the New York State code violations.

Supervisor Mark Lesko was pleased that this illegal rooming house and its owner are now under the microscope of the Town and added, “The Quality of Life Taskforce is working night and day to ensure there is no safehaven for slumlords in Brookhaven. I applaud the collaborative efforts of our Taskforce.”

The dwelling was observed to have its main house broken up into three bedrooms with key locks on doors, along with a a living room, kitchen and three bathrooms. A second apartment was located in the north side of the home and contained three additional bedrooms, all with key lock doors. There was also a partial basement in the dwelling that was illegally converted into a bedroom. This bedroom was adjacent to a boiler room that had fuel oil leaking, causing the adjacent illegal bedroom to reek of fuel oil. In addition to the illegally divided main house, Mr. Calix also converted a two story detached garage into an illegal third apartment.

“The slumlord that filled this home with illegal apartments put its occupants as well as the neighbors and emergency responders’ lives at risk. The Town of Brookhaven will not stand by and let this happen. Our Quality of Life Taskforce did a thorough job of investigating, issuing violations and now the slumlord will face a judge to answer for his violations,” Town Councilman Steve Fiore-Rosenfeld stated.
