Central Motor Pool
The Division of Central Motor Pool is divided into two sections. The Motor Pool administers the Town's fleet and equipment programs, including the Town's surplus vehicle and equipment auctions. Our impounded vehicle section works in conjunction with the Suffolk County Police Department and Public Safety Department to impound abandoned vehicles in violation of Section 1224 of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law, Road Hazards, Section 511-B impounds (aggravated unlicensed operation of motor vehicles) and all terrain vehicles. Our office staff handles vehicle redemption's and numerous complaints concerning abandoned vehicles. The Division supplies the Town's many fire departments with older, unclaimed junk vehicles for their rescue drills.
We receive many phone calls with questions regarding abandoned vehicles, as per the following examples:
Question: How long can my vehicle be on the street with no plates?
Answer: According to the law, an "abandoned" vehicle may not be left on the roadway for more than six hours.
We receive calls from taxpayers who own property on which a vehicle has been abandoned. According to the law, such vehicles may be removed after ninety-six hours. We will then tow the vehicle at not cost to the property owner, with written authorization to enter the property.
We also render a service to residents who wish to dispose of unwanted vehicles. If a vehicle owner cannot get a junk or salvage company to respond to a request for disposal of unwanted, the Town will gladly accommodate the owner by collecting the vehicle, at no cost.
