Supervisor Lesko and Councilman Fiore-Rosenfeld Announce Quality of Life Task Force Action in Port Jefferson Station

Farmingville, NY - On March 16th, 2010, the Brookhaven Town Quality of Life Task Force executed a search warrant on an illegal three-family home and rooming house at 425 Terryville Road in Port Jefferson Station. Through the Town’s efforts since March 16, the Town has secured $10,000 in fines from the landlord/owner and he was ordered to re-convert the dwelling back to a single family home. The owner will also be subject to a court ordered inspection.

When Investigators from the Brookhaven Town Law Department executed the search warrant with the Suffolk County Police, they made observations that revealed three illegal apartments and illegal basement occupancy. The basement bedroom was adjacent to a boiler room that was not to code and had fuel oil leaking on floor. The exterior had a two story detached garage that was converted into a third apartment, with a kitchen, a bathroom on the first floor, and a bedroom and living room on the second floor. The dwelling housed approximately 13 occupants. The lead investigator issued the owner of the property eight misdemeanor appearance tickets for the three apartments and a finished basement area. In addition to the appearance tickets, a Town Building Inspector issued the required violation notice for all the NY State code violations at the site.

Supervisor Mark Lesko said, “Our Quality of Life Task Force has proven time and again to be an extremely effective weapon against those who violate the law in the Town of Brookhaven. I commend the swift action of the investigators handling this case and their efforts to protect the health and safety of the residents of the home, as well as the community.”

Councilman Fiore-Rosenfeld, who represents the 1st District where the property is located, said, “illegal home conversions like this one create a hardship for everyone in the community and they will not be tolerated. Thanks to the work of our Quality of Life Task Force, the Town has once again sent a strong message that we will do everything in our power to stop this kind of illegal activity.”

If residents believe that a property owner is in violation with an illegal multi-family home, or in violation of any other Town of Brookhaven codes, they can call 451-TOWN to file a complaint.
